Munich City Guide 2008

Munich Olympic Park

The park was built for the 1972 XXth Summer Olympics held in Munich, and is dominated by the 289 metre television and radio tower. A visit to the tower is well worth the extensive view of the city and the mountains in the background which are about 70km away. This was the 1972 Olympics City and made Munich the modern city it is today.

The rotating restaurant is a must have, night time experience. The site selected was waste ground on the edge of the city and most of the rubble from the war damaged city of Munich was transported to this site to create a sculptured landscape, covered with grass and planted with hundreds of trees.

A very popular place in all seasons for the casual walker, joggers, roller skaters and cyclists. An ice skating  rink in the wintertime and skateboard in summer compliment the swimming pool , bowling alley and fitness and recreation centres. Today the park hosts many world class events in the Olympiahalle and the Olympic stadium was the home of Bayern Munchen (Bayern Munich) until 2005, the famous football team. Bayern Muenchen now play in the Alliance Arena. Close by is the BMW factory and the BMW museum. This was also where the Munich massacre happened in the nearby  Olympic village.
